Working within the mediums of painting, drawing and collage Conway’s work takes inspiration from the realms of psychology, gender identity, traditional Irish folklore and the Irish oral tradition of storytelling. While inspired by the intersection of these themes, the essence of her work is to function as a contemplation of her life experiences growing up in the west of Ireland. Materiality is a key component of Conway’s artistic practice; by experimenting with the heterogeneous properties of certain materials she is able to create – and dissipate emotional tensions. Conway is also drawn to the work of the surrealists, and it is through this stylistic lens that she creates personal motifs and metaphor so as to construct new personal narratives in her paintings.
